San Juan - When people are about to turn 65 years old, they should apply for Medicare coverage. This is the federal health insurance program for people over that age, some younger people with disabilities or some people with chronic, terminal illnesses.

This process can sometimes cause confusion or unnecessary stress for people.

For people turning 65, whether they are retired or not, they must apply for Medicare coverage. In some cases, this notification is received automatically.

If not received, the individual should contact the Medicare office to complete the application. The agency responsible for the Medicare program is known as the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Social Security offices work in coordination with CMS to help enroll individuals in the Medicare program.

The Medicare program includes different parts, commonly identified by letters.

Medicare Part A refers to hospital health insurance and covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and some home health care services.

Medicare Part B consists of health insurance that covers physician services, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventive health services.

Individuals who qualify for Medicare Parts A and B may elect to receive all of their health care services through a Medicare-approved private health care delivery company.

This is what is known as Part C or Medicare Advantage. On the other hand, Medicare Part D is the one that includes prescription drug coverage, assisting the beneficiary to cover the cost of prescription drugs, including vaccines.
