ABOUT 37 MUNICIPALITIES HAVE MORE THAN HALF OF THEIR POPULATION BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL

In Maricao, Guánica, Adjuntas, Lajas, Jayuya and Comerío, between 60% and 64% of their inhabitants have incomes below the poverty level, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Community Survey, released by the Institute of Statistics. Half of the population in 37 municipalities lives in poverty.

In Gurabo, Trujillo Alto, Dorado, Carolina, Toa Alta, Culebra and Bayamón, the median household income is between $30,000 and $39,000. The municipality with the highest household income is Guaynabo, with $44,000.

The data offer a sociodemographic profile of the population of the municipalities and show that the central and southern municipalities of Puerto Rico have the youngest population, while the municipalities with the highest percentage of people over 65 years of age are in Hormigueros, San Germán, Lajas and Rincón.

Most of the municipalities with the highest percentage (50%-74%) of households with broadband Internet access are located in the metropolitan region. Lajas, Cabo Rojo, Maricao and Las Marías have the least access, with less than 35% of their households having Internet access.

"The map series facilitates geographic perspective on features of interest within Puerto Rico. The behavior of the geographic patterns could support government and community management, analysis for decision making as well as stimulate research. In the same sense, the electoral district profiles serve as basic metrics for current and future public policy that affects the residents of these regions," said Alberto L. Velázquez Estrada, statistical project manager at the Institute.

The Selected Indicator Map Series includes information collected during the 2014-2018 period through the Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. This series includes 10 indicators of demographic, social and economic topics at the level of municipalities and neighborhoods in Puerto Rico. In addition, with information from the same period (2014-2018), the SocioDemographic Profiles of Puerto Rico's Electoral Districts were published, which are divided into volumes I and II, with the 8 Senatorial Districts and the 40 Representative Districts, respectively. These provide a detailed photograph of each electoral district with essential information to know the particularities of the population residing in each one of them. Both new products (Map Series and Profiles) are part of the Census Data Network of Puerto Rico (SDC-PR) publications. All can be accessed free of charge at the SDC-PR website censo.estadisticas.pr.
